According to Kant, the lack of progress in metaphysics is due to the fact that metaphysicians tried to solve metaphysical problems without examining the limits of our reason, and the result was a dogmatic metaphysics with contradictions and conflicts. After examining our different kinds of cognition, he thinks that the key question to be answered before engaging in metaphysical efforts is “How are the synthetic a priori propositions possible?” Some contemporary Islamic philosophers have sought to answer this question inspired by the teachings of Islamic philosophy. One solution involves resorting to conceptual relations that make the synthetic a priori judgments possible. The other solution is denying the a priori/a posteriori and analytic/synthetic distinctions among our cognition. In this paper, I show that these two solutions are not successful. Then I propose another solution for which the possibility of synthetic a priori judgments is a fundamental fact that needs no explanation. This suggestion seems simpler and fully consistent with the teachings of Islamic philosophy.
