The mean mostly has been considered in the history of the Aristotelian ethics’ commentaries as the main term of his ethical thought so that it transformed from an ethical concept to his ethical theory. Thus the validity of The Aristotelian ethical attitude is evaluated by the mean as the central thesis. But it appears by investigation of his thought’ way in the text of the Nicomachean Ethics that the mean is firstly suggested as a possibility for understanding the best choice in every given situation which it consist of this rule: in any ethical condition choose the best choice considering all the factors. Afterwards he criticizes it because it does not say to us any particular and positive instruction. In this step Aristotle concludes that the mean is individual intuitive perception, not a general and absolute criterion, and therefore requires general rule for its individual determination.. The mean therefore is based on the correct rule which itself relis on the correct reason or practical understanding(phronesis). Thus the Mean is not the self-founded criterion but it relies on the correct rule which it based on the practical reason.
