چکیده

Phenomena such as stress, placebo and nocebo effects, suggestion, mental imagery, and positive or negative emotions belong to a broader class of psycho-physical phenomena in which psychological states exert measurable effects on physiological functioning. These phenomena have become the subject of increasing scientific investigation in recent decades within psychology, medical sciences, and related empirical disciplines. Although these sciences have succeeded in explaining the behavioral, biological and neurological mechanisms associated with these phenomena, the question concerning the ontological ground underlying the influence of the psychical upon the physical still requires philosophical investigation, and a philosophical–metaphysical approach can reveal more fundamental dimensions of these phenomena. The present study, employing a descriptive–analytical method and a philosophical approach, seeks to explain the capacities of Mulla Sadra’s Transcendent-Philosophy for providing an ontological framework for psycho-physical phenomena. The findings of the study indicate that, based on Sadrian principles, an ontological model can be presented that, through a non-reductionist approach, explains the ontological process of the influence of psychological states on the body through (a) perception, (b) the evaluation of what is perceived and the assignment of significance, value, or normative status to it (iʿtibār), (c) existential affection of the soul, (d) followed by its bodily manifestation.
