Contemporary environmental crises, far beyond being mere technical and managerial challenges, possess deep roots in the metaphysical foundations and anthropocentric paradigms governing humanity’s relationship with nature. This research, employing an analytical-descriptive approach, undertakes a comparative examination of two pivotal philosophical perspectives within the Islamic intellectual tradition—namely, “Categorical attribution” and “Illuminative attribution”—and profoundly analyzes their fundamental impacts on the bedrock of environmental ethics. The core question is which of these paradigms offers more robust ontological foundations and more sustainable ethical motivations for confronting current environmental crises and redefining human responsibility towards nature. The research findings indicate that while both approaches possess analytical strengths, the Illuminative paradigm, by emphasizing the Oneness of Being, the intrinsic value and sacredness of natural phenomena, and explicating humanity’s position as God’s Vicegerent and divine trustee, provides a deeper, more spiritual, and more comprehensive response to environmental challenges and the crisis of meaning in the contemporary era.
