Considering the fundamental role of the intellectual foundations of every theologian in his opinions and theological thoughts this article aims to examine the epistemological and methodological foundations of two influential theologians in the history of Islamic theology belonging to the two major theological schools, the Shi'as (Imamiyyah) and the Mu'tazila. This research has been done by the descriptive and analytical method using library resources. By examining the works and ideas of two thinkers, the researchers have come to the conclusion that both theologians consider the knowledge of God as the first obligation or duty for every human being who has reached intellectual maturity, and this is an intellectual and even pre-religious knowledge; and practical reason dictates that every human being should know the true creator of himself/herself and the world; and according to morality, he/she should be grateful to his/her benefactor. Not only reason is the basis of every religious knowledge but also In understanding religion, which the book and tradition are the most important sources of it, one should seek help from the bright light of reason. These two thinkers are in the same direction in the rational and narrative method of understanding religion; however, there are differences of opinion regarding the function of reason, the relationship between reason and transmission (naql), and instaces of tradition which are studied in this article.
