A common approach to the "nature" of artifacts is based on their "functions". There are various theories on the function that can be placed in two categories: 1- Theories that "reduce" the function to the structure and physical properties of the artifact. 2- Theories that consider the function to be intention dependent (ID). The structural interpretation of technical function (the first category) is in favor of the Value Neutrality Thesis (VNT), while according to the intentional interpretation (the second category), the intentionality of designer/user is necessary for technical function to be determined. The main issue of this article is assessing the position of Neo-Sadraeian philosophers (with a focus on Allameh Tabatabai and Motahari) about the value neutrality thesis. First, the problem of natural-artificial distinction is examined and then the functional realism (functional essentialism) is introduced. Finally it is defended that the function of technical artifacts is one of the “Eʿtebāriyāt”, although its realization depends on the structure and physical properties. Therefore, Allameh Tabatabai's “Eʿtebāriyāt” theory is among the intention dependent interpretation and can be considered as an approach against the value neutrality thesis.
